Vet Expeditions
Veterans ExpeditionsJust Announced: We've been selected as semi-finalists for the Buckminster Fuller Challenge. Possibly a big boost for a great organization. 18 a day, reason number 700,000 for us to reconsider how we get involved in conflicts, who we attack and what we are asking our military personnel to do in our names. 18 is the number of service men and women, active duty and veterans that are attempting suicide per day. *Veterans Expeditions is a non profit group that takes disabled and able bodied veterans into the wilderness and gives them a significant challenge that they take on as a team. What happened on the first trip was moving. I have had very little personal interaction with veterans and after having walked and climbed with some of them for a week in Rocky Mountain National Park my eyes have begun to open to some of the struggles that they face when they return to civilian life, the sacrifices that they have made and the mental and physical challenges that they suffer from as a result. The conversations and memories that the climb and the outdoors conjured were deep and revealing. We plan to follow the groups progress as they prepare for their next expedition (a team of disabled veterans on an extended trip sea kayaking in Baja, in Febuary (whales!)) and as they grow as an organization and reach out to veterans from other nations in order to facilitate dialog and understanding. One of the long term goals of Veterans Expeditions is to bring together veterans from opposite sides of conlficts on expeditions in order to share in dialog. Knowing these guys, they just might do it and we hope to be their to tell the story when they do. * Army Times April 2010
